John Garvin is an Australian screenwriter, diving supervisor and underwater explorer.
He wrote the screenplays for Sanctum and James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D. John has run the diving operations for several James Cameron films including Avatar – The Way of Water, Avatar 3, James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D and Sanctum.
In 2023 he ran he commercial diving sequences for the forthcoming Netflix feature Last Breath.
John is a technical diving instructor trainer specializing in closed circuit rebreathers and wrote the Technical Diving International training manual for AP Diving’s Inspiration and Evolution rebreathers.
He is a founding member of the Caicos Caves Project, an organization dedicated to exploring and mapping the underwater caves in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
In 2002, his company provided the logistics and safety diver support for Tanya Streeter’s world record breaking freedive to 160m (540ft).
John was the diving officer and project manager (sub internals) for the Deepsea Challenger submersible during James Cameron’s historic solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
John has appeared in several films and documentaries including Sanctum, James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D, Extraordinary People and Freedive. Prior to his diving career, he played the lead role in the West End rock’n’roll musical Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story. He continues to enjoy his lifelong passions – diving, filmmaking and playing rock’n’roll.
